Photonics West 2020 in San Francisco

Photonics West 2020 in San Francisco, USA, is the largest conference in the field of optics and photonics and our SPIE Student Chapter could not miss a chance to become a part of this great event as well. Hao Wang and Vira Besaga, our President and Secretary, have attended Photonics West this year as a “first timer”. Hao presented his research work about laser peening as talks within the LASE Program. Vira visited plenty of interesting talks from acknowledged scientists (her research interests include computational, phase-sensitive, three-dimensional imaging, and topics related to optoelectronics) and, of course, plenary talks. She held an oral presentation at the conference for Practical Holography within the OPTO Symposium on imaging of inner processes in semiconductors with digital holographic microscopy (“Digital holography for evaluation of the refractive index distribution externally induced in semiconductors”).

Moreover, being the active members of the SPIE Community, Vira and Hao didn’t miss an opportunity to meet friends and colleagues from SPIE Career Lab family in person at the specially organized welcome evening. Credits for great organization and atmosphere go to Dirk Fabian and Emily Power as well as to everyone who was there on that evening. It was a perfect chance to meet old friends, find new ones, and chat with people from all over the world who feel them passionate about the photonics industry and academia. Hao also joined the SPIE student chapter leadership workshop with chapter leaders from around the world and established good communication with other students.

Christmas Party SPI Student Chapter RUB

In order to celebrate the Christmas of 2019, all of the Ruhr-University Bochum SPIE chapter students were invited to Ruhr-Universität Bochum to attend the Christmas party. The Ruhr-University Bochum Chapter prepared snacks and drinks for everyone on December 11, 2019. Our chapter officer introduced the SPIE student chapter and encourage students to become a member of the SPIE Chapter Officers. Students from the different chairs of LAT, PULS, LAP of RUB participated in the party.

Visit of Prof. Cheng from National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) and his open lecture to students and members of SPIE Student Chapter at RUB

During the Munich Congress in June Vira Besaga, Vice-President of our Chapter, who had also a poster presentation there, has established contacts with the group of Prof. Chau-Jern Cheng, Director of the Institute of Electro-Optical Science and Technology, National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU). Prof. Cheng served as the Supervisor at Large of Taiwan Photonics Society (TPS), is the member of SPIE, OSA, TPS as well as the Topical Editor of Chinese Optics Letters (Chinese Laser Press and Optical Society of America) and Encyclopedia of Modern Optics (2nd Edition, Elsevier). His research interests include information optics, optical metrology, digital holography, hybrid optical/electronic information systems, 3-D imaging, and display. Since current master/doctorate research of many of our Chapter members is related to imaging, Vira has invited Prof. Cheng to RUB and on Monday, August 26, 2019, he gave an open lecture on “Digital Holographic Microscopy and Tomography — Techniques and Applications”. In his talk, Prof. Cheng has covered DHM multimodal imaging, techniques for resolution enhancement in DHM and holographic tomography as well as discussed possibilities for holographic volume reconstruction. Besides SPIE Chapter members the lecture was also open to anyone interested in the topic. As an acknowledgment for Prof. Cheng we have organized a visit to the Chinese Garden within the Botanic Garden of the RUB and prepared for him a small present as a reminder on this trip.

The organization of SPIE Chapter Christmas Party 2019

We have discussed the date, tasks, and plan for the party. Small presents in the form of new logo T-Shirts are going to be distributed during the party. Organization tasks were distributed. The invitation has been already prepared and sent to all the master and doctorate students of the optics and photonics related programs/chairs.

Membership Meeting, November 2019

The Ruhr-University Bochum Chapter held an SPIE membership meeting and made new elections of the officer board on the 20th of November, 2019. During the meeting, the memberships talk about the financial report, activity plan and Christmas-party.

The new officer board of Ruhr-Univ. Bochum SPIE Chapter was elected:

President: Hao Wang

Vice-President: Natalie Jung

Treasurer: Marlon Tranelis

Secretary: Vira Besaga

World of Photonics Congress-2019 in Munich

Members of SPIE Student Chapter of Ruhr-Universität Bochum attended the World of Photonics Congress-2019, which took place June 23 – 27, 2019 in Munich.
The big congress covered various conferences, which were the following:
1. Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics/Europe – European Quantum Electronics Conference (CLEO/Europe-EQEC Conference) – organised by EPS, OSA, IEEE Photonics Society
2. European Conferences on Biomedical Optics (ECBO) – organised by SPIE, OSA
3. Imaging and Applied Optics organised by OSA.
4. Optical Metrology organised by SPIE Europe.
5. LiM 2019 – Lasers in Manufacturing – organised by WLT.
6. EOS Optical Technologies organised by EOS.

Lots of aspects of different studies which were from fundamental and application-based scientific topics can be found in the conference. Many companies presented the latest laser and photonics applications in industry and medicine. The members of SPIE Student Chapter of Ruhr-Universität Bochum Vira Besaga, Anton Saetchnikov and Hao Wang attended the congress and presented their research work as posters and talks.

Open Day at Ruhr-Universität Bochum

On March 22nd 2019, the members of Ruhr-Universität Bochum Student Chapter carried out a small workshop and lab tour for interested high school students with LEGO interferometers during Open Day in Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Marlon Tranelis and Vira R. Besaga showed also the laser chess games and SPIE grating goggles.
